Welcome to the hobby! I often wish members in my family would be interested in rocks. When I die someday, my collection will likely end up in the dump! Oh, well! You can learn alot by what you find. Better out in the feild than in text books that deal mostly in theory! There are many places to go in Utah. And there are still places not many know about today. One spot where you can find tellurides of gold and silver, which are tiny greenish crystals in a purplish-pinkish talc type of rock can be found near Ogden, Utah. Also the bluish-black crystals in flourite(purple) associated with pyrite in quartzite( which is called slyvanite). Same area. Took me alot of looking to find my first specimen in this area. I read about it in the Salt Lake City Mining Review, which is a best friend to a rock and mineral specimen collector. Published in 1899 to the 1930's.
A rock-collector I met once in Nevada, told me how she found grains of platinum in the greenish basalts in the foothills east of Layton,Utah. I never checked it out so don't know if this info. is correct. She seemed honest enough and what suprised me was the fact that she was in her early 80's. Never know who'll you'll meet out there in the hobby! Good Luck to you all!image

Thanks for the encouragement. We do not know too many places yet but we are learning. Our next sep is to figure out how to make our finds look their best. Any suggested books?
